The term generation of computer means to have a major change in technological development that can change the way computers works, operate, resulting in cheaper, smaller, efficient, and powerful reliable devices.
Today technology is growing rapidly and when you talk about the time computer was intervened it happen in a minuscule time.
There is five generation of computer has been introduced and since then the technology has taken a big leap for technological development that has come a long way with unprecedented ways.
Let’s take a look at all the computer generations that have come out and what makes them so much special compare to each other.
1) First generation (1940 to 1956):
You will be surprised to know that the first generation of computers used vacuum tubes as a piece of technology.
The vacuum tubes were quite famous in the 1940s and were bigger components that resulted in the first generation of computers.
But large takes a lot of space in rooms, and some might even take space of an entire room.
The first-generation computer was named ENIAC with 22,000 vacuum tubes, 75,000 resistors, 15,000 capacities and weighs 40 tons.
2) Second generation (1956 to 1963):
The second generation of a computer saw a bigger leap in transistors rather than vacuum tubes. They were widely popular in 1956 and smaller than vacuum tubes.
This allowed computers to look smaller in size, cheaper to build, faster. The first of the second generation was called TX-0 and includes IBM 7070 transistors.
3) Third generation (1964 to 1971):
The third generation of computers introduced IC (integrated circuits) that was used to reduce the size of computers even better compare to the previous two generations and make it faster.
Nearly every computer uses IC at that time and for over 50 years the computers you see have deep roots that have taken inspiration from the third generation.
4) Fourth generation (1972 to 2010):
The fourth generation of computer took advantage of the latest tech known as a microprocessor and commonly known as CPU.
These microprocessors were integrated with circuits and help to make computers to fit easily on your desk table and introduce as laptops.
The first fourth-generation computer was called IBM 5100, and Altair 8800.
5) Fifth generation (2010 to present):
The fifth generation of computers started with the use of AI (artificial intelligence). This time leaps have been made with AI technology and still, there is room for improvements.
The most recent example is IBM’s Watson that featured Microsoft’s Cortana and Apple’s Siri with windows 8 and 10 supported in computers allowing AI to make all searches.
